Gerry started his career as Assistant Electrician at the Theatre Royal, Norwich (1972-1977). He then moved on to being Production Electrician at Glyndebourne Festival Opera (1977-1982), while also being Assistant Electrician and then Chief Electrician at Kent Opera (1977-1978 and 1979-1981). He was also employed as Production Electrician at English National Opera North from 1978-1979.
In 1983, he started his career as Senior Production Electrician on the following West End productions
