Light mounted on the side of a film camera, designed to reduce blemishes or wrinkes on the face of a performer. Named after actress Merle Oberon (originally O'Brien), who was lit using this effect by Lucien Ballard (cinematographer) in an attempt to reduce the visibility of scars following a car crash. The crash was in March 1937, and Ballard first worked with her in 1944.
