Ian Lewis Collection
Ian Lewis is a theatre lighting practitioner, collector and researcher with more than four decades of involvement in technical theatre and entertainment lighting. His interest in stage lighting began at the age of nine, initially through school productions, and developed into a professional career encompassing theatre, live performance, television and film. His work has included technical and production roles at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry, Playlight, Stage Electrics and the Lichfield Garrick, as well as running his own production and lighting company.
Ian has also taught technical theatre and has a particular interest in the development, use and preservation of historic stage lighting equipment and the knowledge of the practitioners who designed and operated it.
He is Chair and co-founder of the Historic Stage Lighting Collective (HSLC), through which he continues to research and document the history of entertainment lighting and its associated people and practices.
The Ian Lewis Collection on Theatrecrafts contains original papers, publications and other material acquired through Ian’s personal collecting and research. It is hoped that making these documents accessible will assist others researching the development and practice of stage lighting.
