Golden Scan HPE  (1995)

While the Vari-Lites represented one approach to moving light design, another quite different approach came out of the disco market: instead of moving the whole light, fit a mirror to the front and just move it! The mirror is small and light and so can move fast, it can trace out patterns that moving yokes can't achieve, and you're not subjecting the rest of the components to the rigours of movement. It feels like the perfect tool to go with performer tracking systems...
Clay Paky wasn't the first to do this, but their Golden Scan did contain some notable technological firsts, particularly being the first moving light to use stepper motors rather than the then-standard servo motors. It was also bright for its day, with a 575W or 1200W HMI lamp rather than the 350W projector lamp of its Vari-Lite contemporaries.
The original Golden Scan just pre-dated DMX, its electronics - designed by the British company Pulsar - controllable via RS232 or 10V analogue signals. DMX came with the Golden Scan 2 in 1990. Upgrades continued through several more generations, including the HPE version shown here.
