The BBC TV feed (below) showed a series of projections within the wheel of the London Eye. These weren’t actually visible on the wheel to people on the streets or from other points of view. The animations were projected onto a framed sheet of Hologauze, which is a highly reflective type of gauze used on shows such as Back to the Future The Musical, which is transparent as well as providing a high quality projection surface. The gauze was located in the gardens adjacent to the Victoria Embankment across from the London Eye, and had a BBC TV camera positioned so that the projection on the gauze was perfectly lined up with the London Eye.
The Pixel Artworks website shows the same setup for a Taco Bell promotion in 2021: https://www.pixelartworks.com/work/taco-bell-iseeataco-2/
The concept has been used since the early days of cinema in the form of a Matte Painting, which is painted onto glass and placed between the camera and the subjects to create an otherworldly environment or to extend a building, or to remove unwanted modern anachronisms.
