Lighting a Cyclorama

PAGE UNDER CONSTRUCTION

A cyclorama is the (usually) white backdrop at the rear of a stage, which can be illuminated for either naturalistic effect (e.g. to portray a sky) or for a more stylised effect.
It’s also one of the hardest parts of the stage to light well. Floods are usually used to provide a wide-angled wash of even light, but it’s essential to get the distance from the cyc correct, and to ensure you have enough floods in the rig. If they’re too widely spaced, there will be gaps in the cyc cover, and it will look patchy. If they’re too far away, the light will be too dissipated / not bright enough on the cyc.
LED lighting has transformed the possibilities, because now you don’t need multiple lanterns to provide different colour washes.
