As well as the intricate interlocking systems for moving scenery, there was a series of systems for controlling lighting.
Frames holding candles were located upstage of the wing flats which run on-and-off stage, and by rotating these, the light could be directed towards or away from the stage.
Systems also enabled footlights to be risen through the stage floor or disappeared again.
