USA – New York – Belasco Theatre

Dates: 1907 – present

Formerly known as the Stuyvesant Theatre. Designed by architect George Keister, built by impresario David Belasco.

Elephants and Houdini

Research ongoing. A set of counterweights is still in place with pulleys nearby which were said to be used for a Houdini illusion featuring an elephant disappearing through a trapdoor and into the basement via a lift. It’s thought this illusion was abandoned before being performed. Further research shows that it’s unlikely the elephant illusion involved a trapdoor, and that it was performed at the Hippodrome (which already had elephants to hand).
