Zero 88 was founded in October 1972 by Peter Brooks, Chris Fenwick, Richard Thornton-Brown and Alan Munton, a group of recently graduated engineers from Brunel University and Freddy Lloyd, initially based in an attic.

Richard Thornton-Brown, Development Director said "We gave ourselves fifteen years to make it work. The countdown of fifteen from '72 reached zero in '88. Thus was born Zero 88".
The first console was the Lightmaster 601, launched in January 1973, from their base in St Albans.

Production moved to Cwmbran, Wales in May 1989. "Why South Wales? "Because it was the nearest development area to a channel port" explains Peter Brooks. "We couldn't get the space and the people to expand in St. Albans." They started looking as far back as 1988, in the spirit of rampant Thatcherism, but in St. Albans could neither recruit the people nor find affordable property.

The company was taken over by Cooper Lighting Solutions around 2000, and is now a brand owned by Signfiy, along with Strand and Vari*Lite.
